Southern Horizon Sector

The Southern Horizon Sector is a horizon zone beyond the risings and settings of both Sun and Moon. Celestial objects rotate in arcs around the south point and, from the northern hemisphere, reach their highest altitude (culmination) when due south. Due to precession, some stars that were visible during prehistoric times no longer rise and may only be seen by travelling nearer to the equator.

A horizon marker for south would be a useful orientational device. It would help an observer to look in the right direction for a particular rising or setting event and assist interpretation of partial night skies.

Notice common themes and variations. Remember that, for any site, this horizon sector may not be the most important one.
