Discovery Circumstances | Found lying on the surface within 1m of house N wall. This area had, in 1999, been scraped clean by a JCB and a trench (c. 30 cm deep, 1m from and parallel to house wall) dug for drains. The trench was later backfilled and the area levelled by hand. Spotted as a potentially interesting stone partially encrusted with hard clay deposits and left in a tub of water for some time prior to cleaning. |

Comment | This is drumlin country. Site is at W end of a ridge of glacial till. The house was built c.1932 and the axe may or may not have come from soil that had been disturbed by the original construction. |
